The two paintings refer to a composition from Gustave Courbet’s two works, “A Burial at Ornans” and “The Painter’s Studio,” in order to compare the structure of modern art history between the West and my home country, Japan. In my works, all the figures of Courbet’s works were replaced with famous people from the modern and contemporary Japanese art industry. I portrayed artists, historians, critics, and other existing figures, both dead and alive, as characters in my works. In addition, to ask permission to use their portrait rights, I sent them letters.
