この作品は、2018年に大原美術館(岡山県倉敷市)のレジデンスプログラム「ARKO2018」に招 聘された時に制作した作品です。作品の主題は、大原美術館の設立者である実業家の大原孫三郎
の支援を受け、美術館の初期のコレクションを収集した画家・児島虎次郎が使用したアトリエ と、大原美術館の歴史そのものです。この作品の特徴は、アトリエに置かれた絵画、その絵画の 中に描かれた絵画という、入れ子状の構造になっている点です。そのように描いた作家個人の動 機として、その頃に題材として向き合ってきた〈日本の近代美術史〉を「大きな物語」と捉える自 らの視点に疑問を持つようになっていたことにあります。また大原美術館の設立史が、郷土史と 日本のナショナルな美術史の両者を意識させるものであることに気づき、その歴史(物語)とこ の作品を見る人々との距離を、画中画の繰り返しという絵画空間で表現しようとしました。

The work was created during the ARKO, an artist-in-residency program organized by the Ohara Museum of Art, which is the first privately operated museum of Western art in Japan. The subjects of this work are the history of the founding of the museum and the studio, provided by the residency program. This historical studio was used by Torajiro Kojima, a painter who collected the Ohara Museum of Art’s Western painting collections. In this painting, I represented the distance between the audience and the history (or story) by using the nested structure of a painting within a painting — a historical painting placed in the studio and the museum’s collection depicted within the painting.
