The Circulation of Art
The research and series of paintings project “The Circulation of Art,” has exhibited at a gallery in Mitsukoshi, a long-established department store in Tokyo, which has a history of over 110 years. I interviewed three former dealers in the gallery, and created the paintings based on the stories and sources. After interviewing three former art dealers, I was able to depict their unique art history; for example, the first English-style auction in Japan was held in Mitsukoshi with support from Sotheby’s. Through the interviews and painting process, I looked back at one aspect of the art market during the economic growth in Japan from the 1960s to the 80s. And I recognized that the economic momentum of the age had a huge impact on importing and localizing European and American art and culture in Japan.
