Tomoko Hisamatsu is a painter born in Mie, based in Saitama, Japan. She completed her MA in Japanese Painting (Nihonga) at Tohoku University of Art and Design, Yamagata, in 2017. Moving between places, she creates figurative paintings and drawings informed by research into the culture and history of each location, and by her personal encounters with local communities. Her practice moves fluidly between realism, sketching, and manga-influenced drawing. Recent exhibitions include “VOCA 2026” (2026, Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo), solo exhibition “Geographical Conditions and Life” (2025, Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Contemporary Gallery, Tokyo), and “Shin Japanese Painting: Revolutionary Nihonga” (2023, POLA Museum of Art, Kanagawa). She received the POLA Art Foundation Overseas Study Grant for Young Artists and spent one year in New York City from 2022 to 2023. In 2015, she received the Toshiko Okamoto Prize at the 18th Okamoto Taro Award for Contemporary Art. Her work is held in public collections including Ohara Museum of Art, Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, and the Takahashi Ryutaro Collection.

Artist Statement

Raised within the cultural context of Japan, I have moved across various regions while continuing to create art. My work is driven by an interest in the power structures, economics, institutions, and histories that shape the art world. I seek to explore both regional differences and the common languages of art.

I have lived and worked in diverse environments—ranging from the Tohoku region (north-east in Japan) and the suburbs of Tokyo to New York City in the United States. In each of these places, I have created figurative paintings and drawings inspired by the distinct cultures, histories, and everyday experiences that characterize them.

For me, the significance of art lies not only in aesthetic experience but also in its capacity to foster social connections—through the creation, ownership, and circulation of artworks. I find beauty in the way art and art history reflect the daily lives and social activities of communities in each location.

Painting is not a goal in itself, but a means of living. It allows me to engage with people in the communities I visit, to think critically and act upon the structures of the art world, and to take part in the social and economic systems through which artworks are circulated and valued. In this sense, painting is both a tool and a vital life choice—something I cannot live without.
