Dancing Salarymen is the first work in the project Japan as Geographic and Historical Conditions, which reexamines scenes from the post-World War II period to the present day through the figure of the Japanese salaryman, an icon of the country’s workforce. Referencing the final scene of the 1964 musical film You Can Succeed, Too, the work seeks to depict the contrast between an era that embraced the myth of unlimited economic growth and the subsequent instability that persists to this day. It incorporates collaged washi paper manufactured not only in Japan but also in other regions, alluding to the fluidity of national identities and cultural boundaries. The material’s lightness and flexibility are utilized in a ceiling-suspended installation that conveys a sense of instability and buoyancy, evoking the distance between past dreams and present reality.

《ダンシングサラリーマン》は、日本の労働者のアイコンであるサラリーマンを主題に、戦後から現代にかけての時代の情景を再検証するプロジェクト《日本という地理歴条件》の第１作です。1964年のミュージカル映画『君も出世ができる 』のラストシーンを引用し、成長神話が信じられていた時代と、その後の不安定な現代との対比を描こうとしています。この作品は、日本に留まらない産地で製造される和紙をコラージュし、国の定義や文化の輪郭の揺らぎに言及しています。また、軽量で柔軟なその素材の性質も活かし、天井から吊るされた構造のインスタレーションにしています。不安定さや浮遊感を表現し、過去の夢と現実の間にある距離を浮かび上がらせようとする試みです。
